The HR Customer Services and Solutions group is currently accepting applications to fill up to 2 temporary positions at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for rehire and/or extension (when initial appointment is less than 1039 hours) if workload and funding allow. Incumbent will serve as a front-line representative of the National Park Service (NPS). As an interpretive ranger at Bullfrog in the Uplake District, incumbent will research, develop and present interpretive programs in both indoor and outdoor settings. Employee will provide park orientation, information, and roving interpretation in various locations. Boat operations are required for the Bullfrog position and incumbent will need to possess or earn the DOI Motorboat Operator Certification.
The Escalante position will be based at the Escalante Interagency Visitor Center, which is staffed by National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Forest Service employees. The visitor center provides information about Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and Dixie National Forest. Incumbent will provide orientation and information to visitors, issue backcountry permits, and sell books and other materials for the cooperating association. In addition, employee may conduct roving informal interpretive and resource protection patrols along a variety of trails and features.
Physical demands : Long periods of standing, walking over rough, uneven and/or rocky terrain, and occasional lifting. There will be periods where assignments are mainly sedentary.
Work environment : Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work involves extremes of temperatures (more than 100F) and terrain (elevations 4000 feet above sea level and above). Occasionally, outdoor assignments may involve strong winds and/or unexpected thunderstorms.
Housing information : Government housing is limited in Bullfrog, but may be available. If you have an RV, spots may be available. Contact the Housing Officer at for additional housing information. No government housing is available in Escalante.
Area Information: Bullfrog is a small, remote, in-park community of approximately 300 residents during the summer and about 100 residents in the winter. Amenities include a marina, marina store and gas docks, seasonal lodge and restaurant, gas station/convenience store and garage, urgent care clinic, and a K-12 school. Teacher/student ratio is one teacher per 2-5 students. Full service communities are in Blanding, Utah (90 miles) and Monticello, Utah (115 miles) which has dentists and a small hospital. Major services are available in Cortez, Durango, and Grand Junction, Colorado, or Page, Arizona, all 3 to 5 hours away via all weather highways. The Bullfrog Sub-District encompasses beautiful red-rock canyon country. Bullfrog is the main access point to Lake Powell in the Uplake District and visitation is heavy in the summer. Summer temperatures run to the low 100's and winter temperatures are in the 30's with sunshine most days of the year. Recreation runs the spectrum of outdoor activities with backpacking, canyoneering, skiing (water and snow), boating, whitewater sports, hunting, and fishing all within a few hours' drive and some within walking distance of the housing area. Bullfrog is an active outdoor community and social events are common. Depending on your service provider cell phone and internet service may be available, but due to the remote nature of this duty location it is likely that service would be spotty and should not be considered a guarantee.
Escalante is a small community of approximately 800 residents. Amenities include a small grocery store with basic food items, a natural food store, gas stations, a few restaurants, and outdoor gear shops. Recreational opportunities in the area include hiking and mountain biking areas along the Escalante River and plateaus around town. The nearest big town is Panguitch (65 miles) and the nearest cities are Cedar City (134 miles), Richfield (145 miles), St. George (184 miles), and Salt Lake City (311 miles). Elevation is 5800' and annual rainfall is about 12. Government housing is not available in Escalante.

Quality Ranking Factor: Boating (only for Bullfrog)
Applicant must possess a current Department of Interior (DOI) Motorboat Operation Certificate (MOCC), or a current DOI Motorboat Operator Instructor certificate; or applicant must must be able to participate in DOI Motor Boat Operation Certification Course (MOCC) as part of seasonal training to earn a DOI MOCC certificate.
To qualify for this position, you must demonstrate that you possess either the specialized experience or the education as described below. Equivalent combinations of experience and education may also be used to qualify.
_For the GS-05 grade level:_
A. One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Experience may have been in technical,administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park related work. Examples of specialized experience include,but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator o teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archaeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park,recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. -OR-B . A 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of related coursework. One year of full time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours. -OR- C . Equivalent combinations of education and experience.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. In order to receive credit for experience, your resume must clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment ( month/year ), and the number of hours worked per week.
Credit for experience is given on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.

Participation in the Federal Employees Health Benefit (FEHB) program - Employees on temporary appointments, seasonal schedules who will be working a schedule of less than six months per year, and intermittent employees who are expected to work 130 hours per month or more for at least 90 days will be eligible to enroll in an FEHB plan. Employees electing to participate in the FEHB will be responsible for the employee share of the premium while on the official agency roles, which is deducted from bi-weekly earnings. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
